NORTHERN IRELAND ASSEMBLY ELECTION - MARCH 7 2007
Nominations Closed: Tuesday February 13 -
Click HERE for Northern Ireland Assembly nominations
Polling Day: 0700 to 2200 Wednesday March 7
Declarations: From daytime Thursday March 8
The Northern Ireland Assembly election takes place on Wednesday March 7
The body has 108 Members with six each elected in the province's 18 parliamentary constituencies by the single transferable vote proportional representation system.
Counting will start on Thursday March 8 and final results may not be through for as many as three days.
PA News will be transmitting nominations and the full results - which could involve as many as 18 counts in some constituencies on the basis of past contests.
THE SYSTEM: Under the STV system electors are asked to number candidates on the ballot paper in order of preference
The system involves two distributions of votes through many counts:
:: Candidates passing a quota - one seventh of the turnout plus one vote - are declared elected and the number of their votes above the quota are distributed to other candidates in accordance with their supporters' lower preferences.
:: Low scoring candidates are progressively eliminated and their votes distributed to other candidates in accordance with their supporters' lower preferences.
A constituency's six seats are filled by either candidates passing the quota or being the balance left when all others have been eliminated.
NOMINATIONS:
We will aim to file collated nominations for the 18 constituencies by about 2200 on the night of Tuesday February 13 but we could be delayed if authorities have difficulties publishing nominations.
They will be catchlined ULSTER Nominations Collated and transmitted in text form, category code XTA, and data format, category code XDA.
They will contain, in addition to candidate names and titles and whether they are sitting Assembly Members in the same constituencies (*) or in different ones (+), party abbreviations, an electorate figure and the constituency's voting figures for the 2003 Assembly election.
Candidates' details will be given in the following party order: Conservative, Labour, Ulster Unionist, Democratic Unionist, Social Democratic and Labour Party, Sinn Fein, Alliance, Workers' Party, followed by other candidates in alphabetical order of party description.
If, as a result of the rolling register, electorate figures are not available on polling day, the electorate will not be included in our first nominations transmission but there will be a rerun as soon as they are available.

Also sent at the same time will be a list of party names and abbreviations catchlined ULSTER Abbreviations and category coded XTH.
RESULTS RUSHES: Rushes will be sent before count results giving the names of candidates elected. They will be catchlined POLL Ulster followed by the constituency serial number and category-coded XTJ. For example: POLL Ulster 1 for Antrim East.
Example of a snap wording: "John Jones (UUP) elected at fifth count at Belfast East."
RESULTS:
We will be transmitting results of each of the many counts in the 18 constituencies as they are completed.
They will be catchlined POLL Result followed by the constituency serial number.
They will be category-coded XTP in text form and XDP in data format
The information includes:
:: Turnout, percentage turnout and, in data format, the quota. We will only be displaying valid turnout which will appear twice in Record 00 of the data format: in the fifth field after the electorate and in the eighth field before the quota
:: Candidates and their votes
:: Whether any candidates have been elected at that stage
:: Whether any have been eliminated
:: First count votes cast for parties and the percentage vote share and changes since 2003.
Second and subsequent counts will indicate whether votes are being distributed on the basis of a surplus for candidates exceeding the quota - a seventh of the valid turnout plus one vote - or alternative preferences of low scoring candidates who are being eliminated.
